Brakes are your car's most important safety system, and they usually tell you when they need attention. Catching problems early is safer and often cheaper.

Warning signs

  • Squealing or squeaking when you brake — often the pad wear indicator
  • Grinding or growling — pads may be worn down to metal
  • A soft, spongy or low brake pedal
  • Vibration or pulsing through the pedal or steering wheel
  • The car pulls to one side when braking
  • The brake warning light is on

Pads, rotors and fluid

Brake pads wear gradually and typically need replacing every few tens of thousands of miles, depending on driving style. Rotors can warp or wear and are often replaced alongside pads. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and should be changed as your manual recommends.
