Summer heat is hard on cars. Batteries weaken, tires lose pressure faster, and cooling systems work overtime. Use this checklist to stay ahead of problems.

Under the hood

  • Coolant: check the level when the engine is cold, and never open a hot radiator cap.
  • Battery: test it if it's more than three years old.
  • Oil: heat thins oil — stay on schedule, or follow the severe-service interval.
  • Belts and hoses: look for cracks, bulges or fraying.

Tires

Check pressure monthly, first thing in the morning before driving. Use the pressure on the sticker inside the driver's door, not the maximum printed on the tire.

Cabin comfort

  • Test your A/C before the first heatwave.
  • Replace the cabin air filter if airflow seems weak.
  • Use a sunshade to protect the dashboard and keep the interior cooler.

Keep an emergency kit

Pack extra water, a phone charger and sun protection. Never leave children or pets in a parked car — interior temperatures rise dangerously fast.
