Whether you're heading to the coast or across state lines, a little preparation goes a long way. Before you load the car, run through this checklist.

Check the car first

  • Tire pressure (including the spare) and tread depth
  • Oil level and coolant
  • Wiper blades and washer fluid
  • Headlights, brake lights and turn signals
  • Battery terminals for corrosion

If anything's due, book it before you leave — a CARELX technician can handle an oil change, battery test or wiper replacement at your home.

The 10 essentials

  1. 1Driver's license, registration and insurance card
  2. 2Phone charger and a portable power bank
  3. 3Jumper cables or a portable jump starter
  4. 4Tire pressure gauge and a working spare, jack and lug wrench
  5. 5First-aid kit
  6. 6Flashlight with spare batteries
  7. 7Water and non-perishable snacks
  8. 8Warning triangle or reflective vest
  9. 9Paper towels, wipes and a trash bag
  10. 10Offline maps downloaded for areas with poor signal

Plan your stops

Long stretches of highway can mean long gaps between gas stations. Fill up when you hit half a tank, and take a break every two hours to stay alert.

If something goes wrong

Pull over safely, turn on your hazards and request help in the RODLX app. You'll see the price before you confirm and can track your technician live as they head to you.
