A breakdown is stressful, especially on a busy Houston highway or late at night. The good news: a few calm, simple steps keep you safe and get help to you faster. Here's exactly what to do from the moment something goes wrong until your technician arrives.

1. Get your vehicle out of traffic

As soon as you notice a problem — a warning light, a strange noise, a flat tire or loss of power — signal and move as far right as you safely can. A wide shoulder, exit ramp or parking lot is ideal. Avoid stopping on a curve or just over a hill where other drivers can't see you.

2. Make yourself visible

  • Turn on your hazard lights immediately.
  • If it's dark, keep your interior lights on.
  • If it's safe to get out, place a warning triangle or flares 50–100 feet behind your vehicle.
  • Raise your hood — it's a universal signal that you need help.

3. Decide whether to stay in the car

On a highway, staying inside with your seatbelt on is usually safest. If your car is in a dangerous spot or there's smoke or a fuel smell, get out on the side away from traffic and move well behind a barrier or up the embankment.

4. Request roadside assistance

Open the RODLX app and choose the service you need — jump start, tire change, lockout, fuel delivery or winch-out. GPS confirms your exact location, so you don't need to know the nearest mile marker. You'll see the labor price before you confirm.

5. Prepare while you wait

  • Keep your phone charged — lower screen brightness and close unused apps.
  • Have your driver's license, insurance card and vehicle details handy.
  • Note anything unusual you saw, heard or smelled before the breakdown; it helps the technician diagnose faster.
  • Lock your doors if you're waiting inside the car.

6. Verify your technician

Your RODLX app shows your CARELX technician's name, photo, rating and vehicle. Match these before you unlock your car or hand over keys. Every CARELX technician is background-checked and verified.

Breakdowns happen to everyone. Staying visible, staying calm and letting a verified professional handle the rest is the fastest way back on the road.
