What to Do When You Run Out of Fuel

Stranded with an empty tank? Here's how to stay safe and get going.

It happens more often than you'd think — a long commute, a missed exit, a gauge you trusted a little too much. If your car sputters to a stop, here's what to do.

Get to safety

As the engine loses power, signal and coast to the shoulder or a parking lot. Turn on your hazard lights. Power steering and brakes may feel heavier once the engine stops, so steer firmly.

Request fuel delivery

In the RODLX app, choose Fuel Delivery. A technician brings enough fuel to get you to the nearest station. The labor price is shown upfront; the fuel itself is charged separately.

Don't walk along the highway

Walking to a gas station along a busy road is risky. Stay with your vehicle — or behind a barrier if it isn't safe inside — and let help come to you.

Prevent it next time

  • Refuel when you reach a quarter tank.
  • Use your car's range estimate as a guide, not a guarantee.
  • Plan fuel stops on long trips.
